Terrestrial globe, English 1848
The globe design was intaglio printed in black ink on wove paper and hand colored and varnished after mounting on to a papier maché and plaster sphere; the brass meridian ring was missing. The discolored and fragmentary varnish was removed with scalpels and solvents, the paper gores were removed for their repair which included filling areas of loss (including digital reproduction of missing design elements based on an identical globe in an English institutional collection), mending and reinforcement with Japanese paper and wheat starch paste, and repair of the sphere. The paper gores were remounted and the surface was varnished with a natural resin varnish for saturation and protection from handling. The brass meridian ring was reproduced using the example from its companion celestial globe.
